How to Trick Your Body To Feel Full Faster
When you are dieting, you are essentially trying to feel full faster, so you don’t get cravings. You are hard pressed to do this and some days it seems an impossible thing to do. However, there are some tips, tricks and knowledge that can help you feel full faster.
What You Need to Know About Hunger
Hunger is a signal to the brain--and sometimes that signal can be misconstrued. We now know that we lose the capacity to feel thirsty after age 25 for whatever reason we can be dehydrated and really not feel thirsty until we are completely parched. We also know from studies regarding that capacity that thirst can be misconstrued as hunger.
When you find yourself hungry--the first thing you need to do is drink a glass of water. This way, you are going to send the signal to your brain that you are feeling full. There are also a lot of ways to flavor water. The better the taste of what you are using--the better.
Another great trick is to eat 4 oz of oatmeal prior to eating a meal so you are full. It is a healthy trick too which is two-fold. You are getting the best fiber intake and you are cleaning yourself out at the same time. Oatmeal comes in a variety of flavors and can be the best way to have a tasty filling treat.
Eating Patterns That Make You Feel Full Faster
It sounds crazy, but you can use food to feel full faster. It sounds counter-productive but if you eat a certain way you can trick that signal going to the brain and never feel hungry.
This is how it’s done: Make sure you have small amounts of food portioned out for the day or the week. What you would normally eat in three meals, you would eat in six. It is very good for weight loss and your body will have no reason to ever send the signal that you are hungry.
Other Easy Ways to Feel Full Faster
According to Everyday Health, there are several other surprisingly easy ways to satiate your appetite without having to risk packing on the pounds:
- Eat low-calorie foods that are high in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables. These will fill you up quickly, give you a boost of nutrition, and they won’t undo your diet efforts.
- Add a small soup or salad to your meal. In the case of the soup, the fluid will fill you up, and in the case of the salad, you’re getting those nutritious, low-calorie, fiber-rich veggies. Plus, these foods take longer to consume, so it gives your body enough time to register that it’s getting food into its belly.
- Speaking of giving your body time to register that you’re eating, another way to fill up fast is by eating more slowly. Take your time and really savor the flavors that you are consuming. And, keep in mind that it takes roughly 20 minutes for your brain to realize that your belly is full, so if you are going to eat more slowly, you give yourself a chance to recognize when you’re full, and that can help prevent overeating.
- Small portions are a great way to lose weight, but if they leave you feeling hungry, it isn’t going to work. The key is to fill your plate with nutritious, filling foods. Here’s a strategy that you can try: use a smaller dish or bowl, and fill up half of it with fruits and veggies. Then, fill another quarter of that dish with some tasty lean protein. The rest of the dish can be a whole grain or starch, such as whole-wheat pasta, whole-grain bread, or potatoes.
