Just because you are at work—especially if you work a sedentary desk job—certainly does not mean that you can’t find ways of being more active to stay fit and healthy. In fact, there are some odd, yet effective, ways to stay active while on the job. Check out the tips below to get started.

Don’t Send Emails All the Time

Rather than sending an email or a text message to your colleagues, get up and walk over to them to talk to them. You might be surprised by how many times you need to get up and walk over to them when you take your communication out of the digital format. And all of those steps will certainly add up throughout the day.

Go for a Walk During Lunch

Lunchtime is the time to refuel, but it is also a great time to get up and go for a walk. Maybe you could head outside and go for a walk if the weather is nice, or maybe your building is big enough that just walking around inside will be enough to help you stay active. Take a friend and make it a time to socialize and laugh while you keep moving.

Move Every Hour

Sitting and staring at a screen isn’t good for your eyes or for your overall health, and the simple act of getting up and moving at least once every hour could make a positive difference. You could just stand up and do a few stretches, or you could even incorporate some quick exercises, such as chair dips, pushups, jumping jacks, and plank. It might look odd to other people, but you will feel more energized as you get the blood pumping and keep your body limber.

Go Ahead and Fidget

When you were growing up, you might have been told that fidgeting was something to avoid. But the truth is that fidgeting could be a great way to burn a few extra calories throughout the day. So while you are at your desk, tap your fingers or wiggle your feet.

Phone Meeting? Time for a Walk!

Have a long phone call ahead of you? Use it as an opportunity to get up and walk around. Pacing during a 20-minute phone call is an easy way to burn more calories and keep the blood pumping.

Staying active at work doesn’t have to be a challenge, especially if you start incorporating the strategies above.
