Eat More Pulses to Speed Up Weight Loss

A recent study published in The American Journal of Clinical nutrition has revealed that you may be able to speed up weight loss if you add pulses such as beans, chickpeas and lentils to your diet. The research revealed that adding another serving of pulses to your regular meals can help to boost body fat loss even if that’s the only change you make to what you’re eating.

The study that looked into pulses as a way to speed up weight loss was an analysis of 21 different clinical trials that had already been conducted and that involved the participation of 940 adults. Throughout the trials, the dieters were given one serving of some type of pulses – such as beans, lentils, chickpeas or peas. That was made in addition to their usual diet. The participants didn’t make any other efforts to alter or restrict the rest of the foods they’d typically eat and they didn’t change the types of foods they were eating.

What the research determined was that the participants who ate pulses with their meals felt an average of 31 percent more full. This made it possible for them to comfortably eat less food overall than they typically would.

Among those who ate 130 grams of pulses every day, the average amount of weight lost was three quarters of a pound over a span of six weeks. When considering that there wasn’t any other effort, food reduction or limitation required, that’s not a bad way to speed up weight loss. After all, if those dieters were to actually make changes to their caloric intake and make sure that they were choosing nutrient dense, portion controlled meals, they would have only been able to drop even more pounds.

The nutritional and weight loss benefits have been greatly underestimated until quite recently when the true value of increased fiber, protein and the overall sense of satisfaction from a meal has become better understood. While this is a great addition to a meal, it’s still important to focus on complete nutrition and not just one “magic” component for losing weight.

That said, if you’re looking for a steady, gradual and easy way to reduce your body fat over time, then simply adding pulses to your daily diet could be a great way to help you to achieve that goal. Make sure to speak with your doctor before making any significant changes to your regular diet, just to make sure it’s appropriate for you.
