By setting smart goals for weight loss, you can achieve your aspirations for a slimmer, healthier body with greater ease. If you aren’t setting the right goals, and following through on your plan to achieve them, you might find yourself struggling to figure out what you need to do, exactly, to reach a healthy weight.

But, when we say “smart” goals for weight loss, we don’t just mean “intelligent” goals. SMART goals for weight loss consist of a specific system that you can use to achieve the weight loss that you need.

What are SMART goals?

Relevant
Timely

Here’s more about what we mean by SMART goals:

  1. Specific – Ask who, what, where, when, which, and why? For example, YOU will LOSE 10 POUNDS by SEPTEMBER 30 because YOU WANT LEANER BODY MASS, and you’re WORKING TOWARDS A THINNER YOU.
  2. Measurable – Don’t only include how much you want to lose, but your absolute ultimate goal in detail. An example of a measureable goal is: your ultimate goal is to weigh 130 lbs., and you want to wear a size 3 jeans or have a 38” waist.
  3. Attainable – To make a goal attainable, you have to break it down. If you’re starting at a weight of 180 lbs., for example, and you’re working towards getting down to 130 lbs., the place to begin would involve stating how many pounds you need to lose per month. Losing 5 pounds monthly is considered attainable and healthy. At that rate, you’d lose 50 pounds in 10 months. Be detailed here.
  4. Relevant – Ask yourself the following question, “Why? Why now?” Use some imagination, writing about how and why weight loss will enhance your life. When you lose that extra weight, you’ll finally be able to do that triathlon, for example. Or, you won’t be fatigued all the time anymore.
  5. Timely – Make your goal timely by writing the exact date that you’ll have achieved your ultimate goal. Don’t forget to reward yourself, such as with new clothes or a new bike, when you meet your goal by this date.
  6. Be specific, ask Who? What? Where? When? Which? Why? Using smart goals for weight loss begins with specifying. For example, YOU will LOSE 10 POUNDS by SEPTEMBER 30, because YOU WANT LEANER BODY MASS, and are WORKING TOWARDS A THINNER YOU.

According to WebMD, with SMART goals, you can map out what you need to do to achieve your aspirations. So, write down all of your SMART weight loss goals in detail. And, consider using a small to medium sized notebook that you can also use as a food journal. Be optimistic and realistic and reflect on your SMART weight loss goals every day to reinforce them.
