Are you eating like a grownup or are you still eating like a kid? This year, the 21st century is turning 18 years old, which is the legal age of adulthood. So if the century is maturing, shouldn’t your diet evolve as well? If you’re still hooked on the following unhealthy childlike food choices, it’s time to grow up.

It All Starts with Breakfast

Breakfast can be tough because you don’t have a lot of time to eat before heading out the door to go to work or take the kids to school. If you still eat your breakfast out of a shiny silver packet, it’s time to make a change. Pop-Tarts might taste good, but they are the nutritional equivalent to cookies and cake. Empty calories, loads of sugar, and unhealthy preservatives are also found in cereals. So if you’re still eating Frosted Flakes or Cap’n Crunch style cereals, how about switching to a whole grain granola instead? Your waistline will thank you.

Still Snacking Like a Kid?

Are you reaching for those little packaged cakes when you’re looking for a much-needed pick-me-up in the middle of the day? We’re talking about snacks like Hostess Cupcakes, Little Debbie Sweet Rolls, and—gasp!—Twinkies. No, no, and no! Instead, reach for a handful of nuts, such as almonds and walnuts, that are packed with healthy fats and proteins that will energize you and fill you up. It’s also a good idea to ditch the Devil Dogs and have some fruit for a sugar fix instead. Come on, you’re a grownup now, and you know better, right?

What You Drink

Adults drink pure water, or infused water that has some tasty fruit in it, or even just a simple glass of water with lemon. They also drink wine, coffee, and tea. So if you are still drinking loads of cola and other artificially colored sodas that are packed with sugar, this is another area of your diet that has some growing up to do. Pepsi isn’t a health drink, but kombucha is. Be a little more adventurous and you might be surprised by what you find and what your taste buds enjoy. Bonus: your teeth will thank you when you stop dousing them in all of that sugar!

Your Refrigerator Is Filled with Frozen Foods

Kids like to eat frozen meals that they pop into the microwave. We don’t think we need to tell you just how unhealthy those options are, and how much they lack in terms of nutrition. If you don’t cook, consider taking a class so you could start making mature meals at home.

So, is it time to evolve your diet? If so, you could get started right away!
